CREDAI Initiates Green India Council to Drive Green Building Standards

The Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI), the apex body representing over 13,000 developers across 230 cities and 20 states, launched its Green India Council on June 13. This marks a significant step toward making sustainable construction practices more accessible across India—especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
A core initiative of the new council is the development and rollout of a CREDAI-owned green building certification system, modeled after existing frameworks such as IGBC, GRIHA, and LEED. However, unlike these costlier alternatives, the CREDAI certification is designed to be affordable, practical, and aligned with national environmental goals, targeting developers who traditionally cannot access global certification systems.
“Our green certification will be cost-effective, aligned with national environmental priorities, and will incentivize developers to build energy-efficient, sustainable projects. Discussions with the government are ongoing, and once approved, the system will be implemented nationwide,” said Shekhar Patel, President, CREDAI National.
Alongside the Green India Council, CREDAI also launched a Skilling Council focused on equipping the real estate workforce with knowledge in sustainable construction and modern building technologies. In its first phase, the council aims to train over 15,000 workers starting mid-July 2025. Training will roll out in 25 cities, beginning with 16 key hubs including Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Noida, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Kolkata.
CREDAI also announced a strategic partnership with Adani Cement, which will provide GRIHA-certified products such as green concrete solutions, advanced additives, and technical services. The goal is to enhance construction quality and sustainability across CREDAI projects nationwide.
“This collaboration reflects our vision of building a smarter, greener urban future. By combining Adani Cement’s technical expertise with CREDAI’s reach, we aim to accelerate the adoption of sustainable materials in Indian real estate,” said Vinod Bahety, CEO – Cement Business, Adani Group.
Adani Cement will also offer on-site technical support and conduct knowledge-sharing programs to upskill engineers and professionals within the CREDAI network.
As part of its broader sustainability agenda, the Green India Council will also lead large-scale environmental initiatives. It will begin with the reforestation of 9,000 acres in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, transforming barren land into green zones.
The initiative aims to plant over 1 million trees using a combination of scientific techniques and community-based participation, reinforcing the real estate sector’s evolving role in environmental stewardship.
